    Hot hot hot!
It is frakkin' hot. It's been hot for almost a week. I've done nothing really outdorsy becuase of the bloody heat. Well except work.

I saw 'Rudo r Cursi' this weekend. It was terrific fun.

Yesterday I went to mom's and had dinner and worked on the house. I cleaned out gutters, gardened and moved stuff around.

I went to the London Tea House here in the STL yesterday morning. The scones are pretty yummy. I had lots of iced tea and some soup.

No appliance news other than the AC is kickin' it overtime!

My first 2 opera reviews of the season are up.

I saw "Ghosts of Versailles" on Friday night which was pretty amazing.

I love the new Sonic Youth record. It is quite groovy!

    Just Another Manic Monday
The rain falls down on a humdrum town......

Upon hindsight The Bangles were kind of lame.

It is pouring out. It is kind of nice really. I hope it pours ass loads of water on the rich and annoying! Mud and water are the great economic equalizers!

So it has been ages since I posted. Mainly because I am working a lot and just don't have time.

There are great new records out from Jarvis Cocker, British Sea Power, Sonic Youth that I am listening to. I really like the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs record.

It looks like Milwaukee & Chicago for the PSB tour for now. I want to see the statue of The Fonz in Milwaukee. I may also try NYC as well but it's all logistics!

    Bronze the Fonz!

My first Opera review of the season is up.

I saw "Land of the Lost" this weekend. Does Will Farrell know it's over?

    "UP" is amazing and touching!

I only want to see the Mike Tyson bits in "The Hangover." That bit of him in the commerical trailer where he plays airdrums is hilarious. It still does not excuse the fact that he is/was woman beater.

I think that boxing kangaroo in the Looney Tunes cartoons could take him though.

I think Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince recorded "I Think I Could Take Mike Tyson?"

Today at work I have been sorting out the carpet and moving tables and chairs. Wow!

I really want the kids in Tehran to tear the roof off that place! The fix was in!

I had A DJ Spin this weekend. Some big galoot kept buggin me to play his band's cd that he burned. Plus he kept leaning on the table and making the music skip. Then he got gum in the mixer switcher. Luckily it was not my board. I felt bad becuase I had to yell at him. But he kept coming back and buggin me.

Then some bimbo who looked like Sean Astin (really) kept bugging me to play Kings of Leon. She spilled her drink all over the place too. Dudes, check yourself, but for the love of God check your 'ladies.' Especially when they are stupid.

I don't get Kings of Leon anyway.

I want there to be a version of 'The Green Mile' where the guy who is condemned is Dave Matthews.

    APPLIANCE NEWS
My TV has made the switchover intact. My satellite has not gonoe out in the extreme rain! My new toaster oven though burns bread on the edges too much. Ack!

Maybe now that Six Flags is going out of business they can take that Moby looking dancing old guy and shoot him. Now they have made it worse by letting him talk. Call Kevorkian for godsakes.

    I hate the Lakers.

The Red Dwarf special was funny in places.

OK back to my workplace of discontent! I am most definitely not the milkman of human kindness today.

    DJing and My G N' R Moment
So last night I DJed in front of 1121 people. Scary.

I DJed at the Ladytron show here in St. Louis at The Pageant. I was absolutely scared witless because I don't like huge crowds, especially kids.

The kids are all wrong these days with there Hannah Montana and whatnot. But for this show they seemed pretty cool.

Anyway, I arrived at the venue at 6pm to set up meet the staff. They were cool.
They got me a table, chords and lights and it took all of 5 minutes to set up and test gear. I had a 'sound check' to check levels and the amp etc.. Cool.

After that I hung out and watched Data Rock sound check. I saw Ladytron and said hello. I had met them in Chicago a few years ago. They rooted through my CDs.

I started to get antsy because things were quiet. Apparantly I could ask for things within reason and they were brought to me. I asked someone where I could get bottled water and they got on a radio and brought it over.

The doors opened at a little before 7pm. The room was really dark which was cool.

I had a Guns N' Roses moment. In the video for paradise city AXL walks on stage and looks at the empty arena. Well I did that on stage before the Data Rock soundcheck.

There is a great picture of me mimicking the cover of 'London Calling' with an old guitar.

I had a group of people come over and say hi and yell and thankfully no one spat.

I had a Bono moment afterwards because I had to walk across part of stage to get off stage. I did the whole front of the audience hand slap thing which was funny. It was Pope like.

I am glad it went well becuase my work day was complete crap.

    Ladytron, Opera and Vomit!
    Crap Monday,
I got in to work at 8am and my boss laid into me because the front door won't stay locked. I called a locksmith. But it still sucks to get the full force of someone else's miserabilism.

    I need a curry.

I am blogging about Opera for 52nd City. My most recent update is up:

    http://blog.52ndcity.com/archives/000904.php#more

I am DJing before and during the Ladytron show here tonight. I am trying to not think about it or else I get nervous and throw up like the kid in South Park.

Besides all of that I am well. A little nervous and scared but hopefully I'll be ok.

What the hell was I thinking? You have to worry about wehat you wear when you do stuff like this. I also am planning sets which I never do. I even have the post it notes on cds for tracks to play and all of that.

Now I sit at work and wait for 'my assistant' from the venue to call and tell me when sound check is and what time to come by.

I DJ'd on Saturday night. It was an odd night because the bar was jumping late and quiet early on.

I saw the new Hulk movie and was inimpressed. I saw "the happening" and wasn't too scared. I hope this means that I will like "Get Smart." The TV show was the bomb.

    New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84)
In an effort to preserve the 80s I have busted out a hidden simple Minds record, "New Gold Dream (81, 82,83,84).

It came out in 1982 but I discovered it as a freshman in 1983. it ranks up there with OMD's "Crush" as albums of my freshman year of high school. I think I like the faux strings in it. Upon reflection it really was all over for Simple Minds after "Dont You (Forget About Me)." That's when they decided to be U2 or The Alarm and failed miserably. Their early records are weird and fun. Plus when Jim kerr started dating Chrissie Hynde his band and The Pretenders both began to suck.

I saw them once with The Call. It was first big ticket concert I went too. I wore a beret, I remember that much.

In the 90s the Utah Saints smapled it and it was almost a hit again.

The Vatican says I can believe in aliens. Great. What about believing in gays or reproductive rights?

James Garner had a stroke. Back in the day he was a badass character actor. He was awesome in "The Great Escape." However there is something awesomely cool about The Rockford Files.

    "Barnaby Jones" rocked too.

But alas, no one really cares...

    My Boring Weekend
Saturday was spent in old North St. Louis doing a house tour. They are really going all out to rehab and refit the neighborhood. some of the oldest homes in the city are there and they've been restored, saved and given a new lease on life.

I DJed and DJed all night. It worked out that 2 other places need spinners late so i fit it all in, spinning my residency at The roayle and then spinning in 2 other bars/clubs in town afterwards. I got home ass early in the day and was knackered. The roayle gig went pretty. someone tiped me 20 bucks to play "The Safety Dance". I have no shame. Upon reflection it is truly a hideous song. Someone asked for Carrie Underwood and John Legend. I just looked at them. I was mean though and took a 5 dollar tip to play Clay Aiken but never played it. In case you hadn't notice there was a bridal party night out in the house. Whenever bridal parties get together the collective music taste nosedives. Sigh. Instead I made it a point to drive them out and played The Misfits, Psychic TV and old Ministry.

Applicance update: It has been a while since I had one of these...
The toaster at my place is kaput. The clock on the microwave also crapped out but it'll be all good. If you must know the washing machine practically walks around the basement when it runs becuase it shakes so much.

I managed to get through the weekend winds and rain w/ minimal damage. The plants on the back porch got soaked and I had to get a large broom to push water off the stoop.

Rain Rain Rain! I used to like it.

Yesterday was Mother's Day. I had a lovely brunch with my mommie and then did some errands around the house for her. My favortie was cleaning out the gutters when it was ass cold and windy out. But it really did some good in the long run.

Afterwards I went grocery shopping and watched some baseball. In the late PM I watched the first part of a series I DVRed on WW1. it was on last February and it is base don the book by Hew Strachan.

    Anorak City
It is 1986 in my office. I am listening to Another Sunny Day's "Anorak City." It was a blip on the music map of UK pop music of 1986 but it was lovely.

This has starled me into thinking that 1983-87 was more apex personally for music. it's when I developed the ear as they say.

But there were so many quick one off bands in the UK at this time that made nifty records. Stuff like The Shop Assistants, Laugh and Big Flame. Then the Jesus & Mary Chain broke and everything changed.

This bolsters my argument that Echo & the Bunnymen and The Jesus & Mary Chain made indie rock possible in the UK on a large scale.

I also am listening to the new Futureheads CD which is pretty damn impressive.

It is cloudy and sunny today. Maybe I'll get Thai for lunch.

Wednesdays are alwasy much easier for me becuase I have the radio show at ngiht which will help me unwind! Yay!

    Songs
    got one of these. Urgh!

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to.

    1. The Witch (Made to Measure) Clinic
    2. Anorak City-Another Sunny Day
    3. The Rip-Portishead
    4. Young Folks-Peter Bjorn & Johm
    5. Razzle Dazzle Rose-Camera Obscura
    6. No Lucifer-British Sea Power
    7. Looking for Lot 49-The Jazz Butcher

    Yawn.
I have been away for ages.

Mostly I've had work stuff and it's been too frustrating and irritating to bitch about and bother you all with.

I've also been knee deep in a magazine story I'm contracted for on St. Louis organists and its been research heavy.

Beyond that lots of book reading, short stories, histories of trains, colonization of the third world, music magazines, comics and brick o brack like that.

Most of you were lucky to miss my 'I must play Rick Astley at my DJ spins" phase or the 'Where the hell is the bloody iron" phase too. thenthere was the week I couldn't get any comfortable shoes. Oh yeah my great paratrooper jump boots died and are beyond repair.

I have decided that I am a complete ass. I mean I am selectively annoyed by stupidity and it's a horrible flaw. I mean people who see a sign in front of them but read it and ask anyway, or people who stand in the express line at the grocers with 4 carts of stuff and feign ignorance that they are in an express line. Urgh! then there are people who just don't read or watch any TV to learn the world around them.

"How I Met Your Mother" has been great. "Galactica" has too. "Torchwood" was kind of lame and I am not too moved by my new season of Doctor Who. I've become obsessed with PBS "Carrier" TV series and the Cities of Underground on History Channel.

Plus it's baseball season and I am in a different zone with that all together.

I saw "Speed Racer" last night. It was flashy and fast and vibrant with colour but pretty shallow with the story which I fully expected. "Iron Man" kicks ass in so many ways.

In the no one cares department I've been listening to loads of 1985-86 era C86 UK indie pop. Stuff like The Wedding Present, Sea Urchins, Primitives, Close Lobsters, House of Love etc. Why just yesterday I bought a used Icicle Works CD. I did get the new Futureheads which should be yummy.

    I miss the 80s.

I also am enjoying the new Billy Bragg, Clinic and Portishead CDs.

Getting back to work. Yesterday I put up the rooftop umbrellas. I do this so 2 people can friggin' smoke in the shade. I know the recession means jobs are scarce but man I am thinking of chucking everything and going to Burma to help cyclone victims or something.

The problem with Burma is the military that runs the country and all the pythons. Also, how can a country so close to both Thai and Indian cuisine not be anything like either.

I could use a week in London, New York or somewhere big. Not Coventry or Akron or Khartoom.

Before work, I was up ass early today and watched more of the Ovations Channel special on Warhol. Pretty great.

I have a DVR. It is deadly and always nearly full. I have so much to see and so little bloody time.

I just yawned twice at my desk. Obviously the caffeine is failing.

    I need a bloody curry.

I spent part of Cinco de Mayo w/ explaining how the Mexicans threw the French out and got Independence to people at work. Yawn! I spent the evening out at dinner after the movie w/ pasta and friends.

    Another Yawn.

When did Sesame Street get so bloody awful? When Henson died they should have turned off the lights and called it a day.

It's overcast. I could be at home reading about Fascist Italy or listening to The Smiths. Yawn again.

    I need a curry.

    Yawn.

I am spared form having to see The Swell Season tonight. It's sold out. I am not in the mood for sappy folky gush music. Bring me The Jesus & Mary Chain baby.

I have a DJ spin on Saturday. It may sound grimy and fuzzy.

    Yawn.

I am quite excited about a few things....

    British Sea Power
    "Do You Like Rock Music?"
They are quite grand. they are playing in champaign and St. Louis in March. They do goofy htings like put fake trees and animals on the stage.

    The Magnetic Fields
    "Distortion"
A lovley bit of feedback noise that delivers like the JMC used to. it is pretty great!

    These New Puritans
    "Elvis"
Their new EP rocks! I love them and I think they shall be huge!

    Breathing In Fumes
For starters I think that "Black Celebration" by Depeche Mode may be the gloomiest, sexiest record ever made.

I say this because I played the b-side/mix for "Stripped" called "Breathing In Fumes." Lurvely.

Anyway, We are installing a terrazzo floor at work so the whole building smells of model glue. I am walking around wearing a surgical mask most of the time. I look like the guys in Altern 8 from the 90s.

I woke up at 6am today and just thought "Black Celebration" may be the best record of my high school days. Although I also loved "Crush" by OMD a lot too.

I am sending out job applications and resumes like mad this week. I just am tired of doing what I do and think I need a change.

Actually what I need is a bloody week in the UK or maybe a chair by the sea somewhere not sunny but quiet.

I watched a special on Andrew Jackson last night while Fearless Leader gave the State of the Union (SOTU) speech. Ironic yes. They both invented wars, although Jackson's genocide of the Indians may be worse then the mess in the Middle East right now.

Some casinos at Indian reservations do not accept twenty dollar bills.

Speaking of Indians, I need a curry.

Thank goodness Fearless Leader won't another SOTU speech.

I love a band called These New Puritans right now. They are quite good.

It is really sunny and pleasant out now. It's a post rain sunshine with calm breezes. Really nice stuff. It makes me want to walk around.

Enough of this sunshine business, I think "Black Celebration" is the greatest mope record since "Closer" by Joy Division. If you are in miserable hell, "Closer" is the record for you.

I await super Tuesday with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. Should the stupid vote?

    NY Eve
New years Eve is always weirdly solumn. You can hear the energy leaving the year.

I am spending it at a quiet gatheirng with friends. A far cry from the best NY Eve ever when I was at a party in NYC and there were all these Cubans and rum... I remember walking up on my stairs the next day barely in my apt.

Anyway, I am too old now. No booze for me this year. I am weary of it for now.

Ran a bunch of errands again today and looked at job postings. I arrnaged to get indian food for free for the party because I am too lame to make my own.

I have spent most of the holidays puttering aorund the house and it has been nice.

    I am an old fart.

    Movies
I've spent most of the last weeks trying to see all these friggin' movies. I am in the Gateway Critics here and have to vote on best films of the year. So I have come home to an endless barrage of films to my pad over the last month and a half.

    Here are some highlights...

    NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
this movie is flat out good. Bloody, tense and enthralling.

    LA VIE EN ROSE
Marion Cotillard is a powerhouse as Edith Piaf.

    MICHAEL CLAYTON
    An all aorund solid film.

    TALK TO ME
When is don Cheadle getting an Oscar?

    KNOCKED UP
    Funny as hell.

    SUPERBAD
    McLovin'! Pretty great!

    JOE STRUMMER:THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN
This made me happy and sad. I miss Joe Strummer!

    CONTROL
A handful of US people cared about this one but it is really an awesome film!

If you are bored you can still read my epic blog on the St. Louis International Film Festival. It's at www.52ndcity.com

I am actually going to a film tonight with a friend and then seeing Of Montreal live at The Pageant.

It is a gorgeous 70 degree evening here in the STL.

There isn't much to say except that I am tired about writing about movies. It's inhibited my other senses like listening to music or reading.

I am glad that Thanksgiving is coming becuase I could use the time off.

    Rainy Days & Mondays
    It's Monday. I hate Mondays.
I have seen 11 films at the St. Louis International Film Festival since last Thursday.

It is pouring buckets on this Veterans day. Kind of appropriate really.

I usually like rain but today I am dreading the walk home for lunch in the rain.

Tonight is crazy. I am leaving work at 10 til 5 to go to Chinese film at the festival and then off to a great Thai film afterwards. Then I am walking down the block for the Regina Spektor show at the Pageant. I am kind of excited. I am hoping it's not like seeing a Tori Amos concert. At least it is free and if it sucks I can leave early.

John Sayles and more blah blah blah!
The St. Louis International Film Festival is underway. I am blogging for a site in town about it. You can read my rambling pomposity here....

    http://blog.52ndcity.com/

I met John Sayles last night. He was pretty cool.

Today I am seeing three films including "Grace Is Gone" with John Cusack.

Besides the fest I am juggling a Regina Spektor concert and a DJ gig on Saturday night. I am seeing a brilliant 1920s Japanese silent film and then racing across town to spin the mad tunes. I am a freak. No wonder no one loves me....

    I Often Dream of Trains
So yesterday was a big busy blur.

First I went to work which sucked because I had some set ups and clean ups and walk ins and forms and filing and all of that fun stuff.

I hate half days because those are the days when people choose to dump on me with stupid shit.

Despite sending a memo around I still got asked if I was leaving early. Duh...

This brings me to a pet peeve. We had a meeting in the building for people who want to be on boards of non profits. The program trains people to get on a board and get involved. On paper it sounds great, but in reality 15 of these morons yesterday couldn't find the room where the meeting was even though we have a huge directional sign in the Lobby.

The Roman Empire can blame its collapse on lead poisoning and over expension and stuff like that. Our empire is crumbling day by day becuase we are a nation dimwitted idiots and illiterate morons who can't think or problem solve. These people want to help run charities
but they can't find a frigging room in a 3 story building. Astounding.

    Anyway...

I left early to go to the radio station to interview Robyn Hitchcock. The good news is that he was ncie and kind and cool. The bad news is that he brought the opener with him. The opener, Shaun Nelson, used to be in arvey Danger. he sings harmonies with Robyn on the tou. He was nice but gave off the air of bemused pretension more than I could take. I just wnated to interview robyn and not worry aobut a tag along. Anyway, I made do.

Over the last few weeks everyone of the female persuasion i knew said "I loved him when I was in college" and "He's smart sexy" and all of that. It was annoying.

But when he came into the station in his long over coat and bright red scarf it was kind of imposing. He had a matte of grey hair and carried his own guitar. He quickly disarmed me by being cordial and pleasant. Maybe all that time in the Pacific Northwest rusted his English reserve.

He was so polite and nice. I talked to him for awhile while they set up, tuned and sound checked. He's quite busy these days.

Anyway, he got down to brass tax and played songs.

Here's the in studio set list. I also had a short 20 minute interview with Robyn. You can stream it www.kdhx.org for the next 2 weeks.

    Sometimes A Blonde
    Television
    New York Doll
    Queen Elvis
    Falling

It was also being filmed for something or other of which I am not sure of yet but I am looking into it.

At the end he thanked me for being intelligent and not asking dumb questions which was nice.

Later, after my radio show, I went to his show last and talked to him for awhile after the show. He was still just as friendly and nice.

It's good when people you've appreciated for their artistry end up being really cool in person when you meet them.

Today is the begining of the STL Film Festival. I got my passes and am ready to go. I am meeting John Sayles tonightn which could be fun.

I have decimated my spare bedroom. It is a luttered ems sof subway maps, books, DVDS and mostly CDs. I need to rope that in tonight after my movieness.

    THE POST GFD REPORT
So GFD was pretty uneventful. Mostly went to the pub for a few pints and had some fish n' chips. I said "Happy GFD" to lots of people who just stared at me.

I had my Union Jack up outside the apt and Disko Twin #1 saw it and asked "Wassup?" I said it was Guy Fawkes Day. he said, "Is he a UK DJ?" I said "No that is Tommy "Flashin" Folkes and he's from NYC..." Once again my arcane knowledge bores my mortal enemies into humdrumitity.

It is cold out today, in the 40s. This means I can bust out my Liverpool football scarf. Yay! it's time to buy a new leather jacket too.

I am interviewing Robyn Hitchcock tomorrow. I am usually pretty cool at this kind of stuff but this go around I am pretty nervous. I mean how do you talk to one of the icons of your youth?

I am going to ask him about his proclivity for trains.

I have a nasty 12 hour work day today becuase we have a fancy schmancy dinner here with nice plates and all of that. Fuckers.

I am blogging all of my Film Festival experiences for a literary magazine here in town. Odd but cool. I'll post the link once it goes up and there acutally is content.

    GUY FAWKES DAY
Remember remember the 5th of November
    Gunpowder treason and plot.
We see no reasonWhjy gunpowder treason
    Should ever be forgot!

It's Guy Fawkes Day! It's a holiday that only I care about it seems. I mentioned it to co-workers and they just stared at me doe eyed.

In honor of GFD I am getting fish n' chips and a few pints at the pub. There is no Parliament here to blow up so I'll just shoot off bottle rockets or something.

Anyway, very people today realize how bold and daring the Gunpowder Plot really walls. It was pretty ballsy.

The St. Louis International Film Festival is starting up on Thursday. Once again I got a free badge and will go apeshit, seeing like 25 movies in 10 days. But this year I am juggling a Regina Spektor concert into the mix as well. I am judging one competition in the Fest which is kind of exciting.

No appliance news, but I have furnishing news that is rip roaring! I got 2 massive new bookshelves. A book store here is cutting down space and I got them for a deal. All of books fit onto one shelf and I could use the other for most of my CDS which would open up a lot morre space elsewhere! Yay! They are 9 feet high and were a bitch to get into the apartment and then up against the wall.

I did survey my book collection and realized that I am a seriously scary nerd!

It is going to be freezing overnight here in the STL. It was only in the 60s this afternoon. We should not have the climate of the Southwest and vice versa. Urgh!

    Boo!
I love Halloween! I am not sure why. I wear black all year round and watch classic horrow films all te time anyway...

    The there is the Poe.....
    But I digress.

I watched the Charlie Brown Halloween Special last night. I believe in the Great Pumpkin even if no one else does....

Of all the Charlie Browns in the world. I am the Charlie Browniest....

    Halloween Costume ideas

    Robert Ghoulet
    Richard/Jean Simmons
    Crip Taylor

Since Robert Goulet died that one may be out. The second is a half Richard Simmons, half Gene Simmons of Kiss costume. Crip Taylor is Rip Taylor as a gangsta.

Plans are afoot for my December return to NYC. I ahve to juggle crash space and all of that. so many people to see and so much to catch up on.

It is perfect autumn weather out. It is windy but not cold and sunny but not hot. Plus the nights are cool and breezy.

Robert Goulet was so cheesy that he was awesome!

I saw the Fiery Furnaces the other night. they were not too tart, not too sweet.
